European
Economic and Social Committee (EESC)
The EESC
was established in 1957 under the Rome Treaty as one
of the advisory bodies to the European Community.
It represents employers, trade unions,
farmers, consumers and other interest groups, presents
their opinions and defends their interests in policy
discussions with the European Commission, the European
Council and the European Parliament. In addition to
consulting activities, its role is to promote and strengthen
the role of civil society in the EU and to assist in
establishing of consultative structures.
The Committee is an integral part of EU
decision-making process. It issues standpoints as its
own initiative or at the request of another European
institution. The Committee has 344 members nominated
by the Member States governments. Members are appointed
by the EU Council of Ministers for four years with the
possibility of re-election.
Martin Krekáč, president of PAS
and senior partner of Jenewein Group consulting company,
became a representative of the Business Alliance of
Slovakia in EESC for the period 2006 to 2010.
